Taking care of your baby's skin

Newborns depend on their parents in everything, whether for a diaper change, being fed, or taking care of their delicate skin. What parents need to understand, though, is that their newborn's skin is going to go through many stages until it settles to that perfectly soft skin we all love nuzzling to.

Babies develop many skin conditions during the first few months of life, such as diaper rash, cradle cap, milia, and others. Regular hormonal changes cause some of them, while others are caused by inflammation and on rare occasions, infection.

Taking care of your newborn's skin requires patience and a few guidelines from your doctor. You can figure out the rest along the way.

1.Newborn's Dry Skin
Newborns often have very dry skin right after they are born. This is because they existed in a fluid environment for months. After birth, the skin cells start to regenerate -thus peeling- to give new skin cells. This will resolve on its own, so there's no need to do anything.

2.White Bumps or Milia
About 30 or 40 percent of babies are born with milia, which are white or yellow dots that appear like whiteheads all over your little one's face. Worry not, milia disappears on its own in a month or so.

3.Cradle Cap
Also known as Seborrheic Dermatitis is a very common easy seen in newborns. It starts on the scalp and has a red, scaly, and waxy appearance. Although it might resolve on its own, this condition might require a special shampoo.

4.Diaper Rash
Diaper rash is mostly caused by contact of the skin with urine, stool, and detergents. Though sometimes it might be caused by an allergy to the materials of the diaper itself.
