Prevention is key

Stretch marks, also known as Striae distensae, happen to almost everyone, especially during the rapid growth spurts that occur during puberty and pregnancy.

Stretch marks occur by precisely what their name suggests - stretching. The dermis is packed with collagen and elastin fibre which give the natural elasticity of the skin. Some pregnancy hormones (glucocorticoids) reduce the production of collagen and break down the elastin fibres in the mother's skin, thus, the dermis in the mother's skin loses its supporting fibres, and as the rapid skin growth occurs it becomes stretched and tears, causing stretch marks.

Stretch marks can be red, silver, or purple in appearance, and they often appear in areas such as the stomach, bottom, hips, chest and thighs. The crucial factor in stopping their uncomfortable occurrence is to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Prevention is key against stretch marks; we can only minimize their appearance once they occur.

Controlling your weight is one of the most critical things you can do to prevent stretch marks. Maintaining a healthy weight will prevent your skin from pulling apart and, thus, stretch.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for collagen production in your body, the vitamin is found in many vegetables and fruits, mainly citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons.

Zinc: Zinc helps reduce inflammation and has wound healing properties.

Collagen: Eating collagen-rich food will help maintain the skin's elasticity.

Coconut Oil: For centuries, coconut oil has been known for its ability to nourish the skin.

Hydration: Keep yourself well hydrated, especially if you're pregnant. Your body will increase its demand for hydration as the blood volume increases during pregnancy. Also, hydration is essential for optimal skin's elasticity. Drink 8-12 glasses of water every day.
